Do at home whitening kits give you a better smile?

We know you have a lot of options to consider when it comes to teeth whitening, including at home teeth whitening kits. While lots of our Mesa patients want to whiten their teeth safely and affordably at home, it can be overwhelming to sort through all the options out there.

Questions to think about before you whiten your smile:

  • What results are you looking for?
  • Have you had dental work done, like crowns or bridges?
  • Do you suffer from sensitivity?
  • Are your teeth stained from medication(s)?

If you’re considering at home teeth whitening kits, read on for information on what to look for.

At home whitening kits: what works and what doesn’t?

As with any other smile goal, talk to your dentist before you make a decision on what products or treatments to invest in. Generally, nothing you get over-the-counter will give you the same results as the treatments you get from a trained dental professional. Plus, choosing to have your whitening treatment done by your dentist ensures that you not only get great results—but also, that your treatment is done as safely as possible.

Your dentist will likely offer take-home whitening kits so you can whiten effectively at home and maintain the great results you get in-office.

Are over-the-counter whitening kits as effective as professional whitening treatments?

According to the American Dental Association, most OTC whitening products don’t have as much hydrogen peroxide as professional products. The more hydrogen peroxide your whitening products have, the more quickly and dramatically they whiten your teeth. Depending on your dental health and tooth sensitivity, your dentist will recommend different percentages of hydrogen peroxide to give you the results you want (typically between 15 – 38 % vs 3-10% in OTC products).

What should you do before you use an at-home whitening kit?

We recommend that you have a dental examination before you start any whitening treatment. Using whitening products without guidance from your dentist may cause harm or simply not give you the bright, white smile you deserve!
